Speaker dead!
Bought it from Amazon last late Nov.
. Was happy with the small size, portability, & performance.
. The build-in speakers dead after 9 months, looks like bad audio chipset or thermal trip-off. Once a while it works a few minutes, normally it is totally dead.

Bought this model following quite extensive research and am very happy with it
I bought the aspire 1410-8414 11.6" after quite extensive reserch (including some helpful comments on this thread), considering other sizes, models and companies and comparing prices. Roughly six months later I am very happy with it - the hardware displays no problems whatsoever, keyboard screen and functioning are fine and it performs better than I expected.
It has a netbook's size and weight but is better than a netbook as far as performance, handles surfing and multiple windows very well and has great battery life. The 11.6" frame is quite good regarding both screen and keyboard, and the touch pad is good with useful tapping tools, though at home I still prefer to work with a larger screen, keyboard and mouse. I already had a desktop at home when I bought it, but if I didn't I'd feel comfortable using my 1410 as a desktop (for my needs, which are mostly net surfing and writing).

One knock on it is that, at least when I got it, it only came with Vista installed, which obviously slowed it down. I tried installing Ubuntu Netbook Edition (having never used Ubuntu before) and ran into some serious problems, but fortunately a friend had a paid copy of Windows 7 to spare and installed it for me, which made its performance much, much better than with Vista. See if you can get it with 7 or at least XP, or maybe try going the Ubuntu way though I personally wasn't successful with that.

Something I wasn't sure about when I bought it is whether it has bluetooth or not. Mine doesn't, even though it has a bluetooth symbol on it, which is fine by me as I don't use it anyway.

Overall for this kind of money I think this is a great little computer to buy.

ideal laptop for mobility
It's small and lightweight, but the screen is bigger than a netbook. The keyboard and trackpad is comfortable to use. And the CPU can play Flash videos and games fine, unlike the slow Atom you find in most netbooks. I used to use a somewhat larger first gen macbook, but I've switched to using this laptop 100% of the time. And it cost me half as much as a macbook. It's a popular laptop, so if you look around you can find some cool decals to protect and personalize this model.

Bad customer service
The netbook is great. Everything has worked perfect with just one problem. I am having problems with the internal speakers and since Acer only has email and no phone number for customer service it has been a problem trying to get a hold of them to resolve the issue. I have emailed them multiple times and they have not responded and I have not been able to resolve the issue with my speakers. So as long as you don't care about customer service go right ahead and get this netbook.

Worthy Investment
I purchased this laptop December of 2009. I went from a 4 year old 15.6 inch screen HP laptop to this Acer and I had my doubts, especially about performance and screen size but I felt I needed something a bit more portable for my college classes. Despite my concerns, I was not disappointed and extremely glad that I didn't buy another 00 laptop.


- Screen is vivid, bright and incredibly sharp so the size really was not an issue as I thought it would be.

- Despite comments about not being able to differentiate the touch pad well from the rest of the computer, it really was not an issue and the touch pad is great with the multi gesture zooming and such.

- I'm able to run videos off of Fancast, Hulu, Youtube and Netflix perfectly, even the HD stuff. I often connect the laptop to my TV through the HDMI port and play movies on my TV without a problem. If you have a problem doing any of this, it might be the internet more so than the laptop. We have FIOS in our house.

-I got the free upgrade and Windows 7 makes all the difference. I absolutely hated Vista. So far, the computer has not froze on me or done anything weird.

-The chiclet style keyboard takes just a tiny bit of getting used to but after getting used to it, I absolutely loved it and now I can't type properly on my boyfriends laptop which has the "normal" keys that laptops usually come with.

-The laptop keeps relatively cool and I don't find myself needing a cooling pad very often.

-Multi tasking between a whole lot of office applications, surfing the web and listening to online music doesn't seem to slow the computer down much.

- The only con I can think of is that sometimes you are not able to adjust the screen brightness or the volume using the keyboard but you can still do it on the computer. A restart always fixes this little problem.

All in all, a great investment at about 0

Keep checking the netbooks coming into hardware lab where I work, searching for something to replace a good one I bought for my kids to play with, but they all just seem too small. As a result I searched the high end of the range Netbook / Ultra-low end of the range laptop for something more usable. The Acer Aspire 1410 series does a great job of bridging the gap between small low-cost “netbooks” and more expensive “Ultra-portable” (which is what the classes Acer, like this one). Manages to overcome many of the weaknesses about netbooks, without getting anywhere near the $ 1000 + price range most ultra-portable. Has some drawbacks, in particular the quality of materials: as a lot of Acer products molding plastic is attractive and the tolerances are tight. However, the quality of plastic is more in line with what is expected, a netbook (which means that plastic is less density and more likely to scratch or break). For me, it is reasonable that the overall quality of the components is less than what I had if I did not spend $ 1000 (display as Nice, finishing not as refined as non-responsive buttons, etc. ..). Still, overall this is a computer and put together a good build quality considering the price. While I do not end up buying one myself when it might be the right fit for you if you’re on a budget and you need a small laptop that can do more to browse Web pages that would be a very good choice.

Go beyond the specifications:

CPU: Core 2 ULV SU3500 CPU is a great choice and much more powerful CPU Atom found in most Netbooks. This is a single core (as opposed to the center two “Core 2 Duo”) Ultra Low Voltage CPU at 1.4 GHz allows the application to correct this CPU is about 3-6x more powerful than a typical processor Atom. It also has 3 MB of cache (cache is a form of memory on-chip high-speed) vs. the Atom 512 KB. 6x with the Atom CPU cache this is going to spend much more time running the instructions and much less time waiting for the sub-system memory. It also helps that the Core 2 ULV SU3500 memory bus is about 25% faster than it is on an atom. The Core 2 is technically more thirsty for power than the Atom, but during the execution of applications, the difference is not significant (5 watts for the Core 2 vs 1.5 watts to Atom). The main difference that occurs when in standby or sleep mode, where the atom use much less power than the Core 2 (because of the type of transistors on Atom “leak” less power than those used for the Core 2, when in those modes). So if you need long battery life while carrying the computer in standby around with brief periods of activity you might prefer the Atom based Netbooks (eg sales calls on the road). I believe that many users will probably prefer the Core2 – I know what to do. Update: There may be a dual core version of this out soon. E ‘in the list of arriving at his job, but that does not mean it will be sold in the United States.

Memory: 2 GB of DDR2 RAM is plentiful and the speed of 667Mhz memory is quite good (notebook faster go up to 1066MHz). The system runs Vista is more memory-hungry Windows XP or Linux Netbook found anymore 2GB, but I’m not gonna go as you might think. Still, as long as your not going to do any really serious gaming 2GB will handle the typical office application, without problems.

HDD: 250GB HDD is plenty of storage, since many users do not use more than 50 GB. Serious gamers and video encoders will need much more space than this.

DISPLAY: The 11.6 “1366×768 screen looks good and is much more useful than the 8-10″ screens found on most Netbooks. The resolution is much better than what you find on most Netbooks and is bright enough (200 + nits vs 300 nits on the upper end laptops.) I’ve spent on this model, because the viewing angle is limited (the manufacturer list the viewing angles, as 60vert/90horiz than 120v/140h on a display of high-end) and my children like to stay with me and watch YouTube videos. Limited viewing angles could be a selling point for someone to travel rather not share what is on their screen with others. So while Acer clearly saved bit ‘of money here is still a good display: unless you need a really high quality LCD I think most people will be quite happy with this screen (once again is far better than what you will find in most Netbooks.) For those few who have at heart is made up of AU Optronics and I think it B116XW01 model.

GRAPHICS: Intel GMA X4500HD Mobile does not impress any gamers, but if you’re running business applications that will do well. Update: they have loaded Autocad on this thing at work and was not enough. He could be a driver issue, but the render times were terrible. Not really a surprise, but do not buy this to run the CAD software. Of course for most users this will not be a problem.

AUDIO: laptops are not known for sound and great orator, this notebook will not break from this trend. Even in this case is better than most Netbooks, but not by much. Update: With headphones I found the sound good.

DRIVES: Like most netbooks and ultra-portable that has no CD-ROM or DVD. I recommend buying an external CD Drive. The software industry can begin to move as soon as the USB drive (Windows 7 will be sold on the USB drive), so this can not be a big deal for much longer. Today is a pain not to have a CD-ROM.

BATTERY: 6-cell battery for this notebook is perfect (thanks to low power components). This notebook is probably too small for a cell 8 to form clean, but the cell Netbooks found in 4 more just is not enough, even for an Atom CPU. This 6-cell battery will provide about 3-5 hours of use even if the real aggressive power-saving mode can be obtained more than six hours. Update: We have two of these in our hardware lab and was just pointed out to me that one (which is pre-release) had a higher capacity battery than the release version (5600mAH vs 4400m). I changed my numbers the battery life of up to reflect the release version. It is interesting to note that the non-US version of this laptop’s battery has more capacity. I can only assume Acer was trying to lower prices to compete in the U.S. market close Netbook.

WEIGHT: Coming in 3.1 pounds this is little bit heavier than the typical netbook but not significantly (Netbooks will vary from £ 2-3). Most notebooks are regular 6-8 lbs.

WIRELESS: The usual Intel 5100 a / g / N supports the most common standards ( “A” and “G”) together with the new “N” standard. You should have no problems connecting to wireless networks. This is quite normal even if a few laptop 3G support out of the box.

In short: while this notebook is not perfect, is well constructed and, unlike most Netbooks, actually has a decent CPU. E ‘small and light, but big enough that you can actually use. If you have 1K-2K to spend, you can get a better Ultra-portable notebook (I have a soft spot for Sony and Apple’s offering in this segment), but in this price range there is not much competition.

This laptop is just by far the best laptop for overall functionality.

Pro

1. Very thin and light. Just a little ‘bigger than today’s netbooks

2. Much faster than Atom-based netbooks

3. Bright and wide screen aspect ratio true HD. Resolution helpful.

4. 4G cap expandable memory.

5. Very good microphone and webcam

6. Amazing battery life even with Core2solo CPU. They last longer than my other netbook with the same battery capacity.

Cons (I do not really care for these disadvantages, but here they are)

1. View. I like me XP

2. Shiny LCD screen is too reflective. This can only be me.

3. HD footage from Vimeo and YouTube are some ‘slow (not because of the bandwidth of the network. It’s more like CPU power is not enough for Flash-based HD movies.

(Added on 8/29/2009) Even if the films are in the cache all the way, the CPU reaches 100% with Flash-based HD movies. SD movies are just fine. I kind of look better with this Flash movie HD my laptop netbook Atom though.

5. My wish for the design laptop to be a bit ‘as the MacBook or HP Mini series.

6. I thought the CPU was Hyper-Threading, as Atom. Task Manager shows a single thread. I know it’s “only”, but atoms showed two threads.

(Added on 8/29/2009) The CPU has HT (Hyper-Threading). I had some wrong info there. Even without the HT, this makes it very portable little faster than my netbook Atom.

Although I listed the other hand, are much less items that I do not want. Of course, not running like Intel i7 CPU-based desktop. However, for the size and ease of use, this is a sample of all laptops and desktops that I have ever owned. I will use the i7 desktop video and photo editing. Which may be only 5% of all my computer usage. The remaining 95% of the tasks can be done with this notebook small for me. I can not speak of the length yet, but seems to be well built. However, this is a great laptop with very reasonable price tag!

(Added on 8/29/2009) Some usual stuff I’ve done to make the laptop even better.

1. Usual tune up how to disable Vista Aero and other graphic intensive functions.

2. Removed some pre-installed applications, mainly Office and test anti-virus software.

1. HDMI output for HD TV

1080p resolution worked perfectly including the sound configuration is not much. Resolution 1080 gives all too small to read for my setup. I switched to 720p. The TV does not adjust automatically, so I had to adjust its size using the Intel TV Wizard (This application can not be used with dual monitor configuration. Transition to digital TV-only mode allows.). I adjusted through the application to 720p. The app works, but the screen is refreshed each time the button adjustment has been clicked, I had to press the adjustment very slowly and with patience. When I clicked too fast, the application has frozen with 100% CPU for a long time like 10 min. I had to reboot. Other than that everything worked perfectly!

2. Web cam and digital microphone using Skype

I wanted a small laptop with webcam, so you can put next to my child and her show with my parents in Japan via Skype. My other netbook work, but in situations of low light, the video was so dark they could only see the white eyes. Mic was also giving them echo. When I tried with this laptop, it was day and night literary. This notebook webcam is optimized for low light conditions. They could clearly see my baby. The microphone is clear and no echo. The only minor problem is that the picture is a bit white colored with the default setting. My wife thought I was smoking … haha. I had to change a bit ‘in config. However, the webcam and microphone worked well for Skype. FYI: It will not work as high-resolution webcam, after market, but the built-in webcam meets my needs very well.

This notebook is one of those cases where you say to yourself, “Wow, is as good as I expected, and much more.”

I avoided buying a netbook because of low resolution and poor performance prevents me from multi-tab web browsing, not to mention smooth scrolling with Office documents. When I saw this notebook, I was very excited because it is something that the older generation of netbooks are lacking:

- Good resolution (1366×768)

- Decent performance

- The battery life even better (6 hours)

Except, actually exceeded my expectations.

LCD: Very strong, and very bright. I am surprised that Acer can squeeze in a 1366×768 screen of 11.6 inches, and still keep a clear and defined. It ‘very easy to view, and I do not feel any different from the view of my old 14-inch LCD.

Performance: In terms of word processing, web browsing and software installation was smooth as my old laptop dual-core. This notebook has upgraded the CPU and chipset of the previous generation of netbooks, which contributes to the performance I am seeing.

Keyboard / touchpad: It’s full size keyboard, and is convenient for the type. I’m still trying to get used to some of the main positions, and the lack of home / end buttons. But it is certainly worse than my laptop keyboard others. Acer has also learned the lesson from Aspire 751h, so that the touchpad is centered by touch-typing on the keyboard, and has two buttons. However, the board touchpad is difficult to distinguish.

Battery: From what I read, one hours Acer Asus is generally less than an hour. This notebook has proven me wrong. Run in the high performance and still gives me about 6 hours of battery life. Running corporate VPN and Remote Desktop seems to reduce to about 5 hours.

Size: Although slightly larger than the previous-gen netbooks do not think it is more cumbersome. At 3 pounds, is very light, but may still be losing weight.

Temperature: not much warmer, you can use on your lap all day.

Other Pro: 250 GB HDD, 2 GB RAM, 1 Gb LAN, 802.11n, webcam, microphone, no-latch lid

Cons:

- No separate Home / End buttons. Unfortunately I think that most netbooks make this sacrifice.

- Charging is slow (I estimate about 4 hours). The downside, the charger is small and light.

- Still requires a fan to dissipate heat, though quiet.

- Other: no bluetooth

As I said, the moment I started using it, all I could say was “Wow.” I could not believe Acer could come up with something that overshadows Asus (and the rest of the computer industry). For all the laptops I have owned (5), none of them impressed me as this one does.

Update 2009/09/07:

I went on a business trip right after you bought this laptop. E ‘proved to be very mobile. I load the laptop overnight, and bring it to work with me in the morning, without the charger. The keyboard feels very natural, and the overall work is smooth sailing.

At night I use this laptop to play game demos and watching some videos (I had the foresight to snatch a few ISO). DVD greatest game, but there was no one who does not play smoothly, so I guess that depends on the DVD encoding.

Overall love this laptop portability. The battery ensures that the laptop is always ready when I need to use it.
