Update 9-18-2008 – Still going strong. I am very happy with the power output of summer these panels. I wash with a hose 1x/mo to maintain current output up. Measured before washing and after washing the efficiency of the panel is clearly a factor in how much dirt is on them. No long-term problem on a roof though!

Update 2-20-2008 – goes with the chart to “photograph” # 3 above – pink line is the power and the blue line and extends from the panel x 10 to share the chart. The X-axis is the voltage of the panel. Data was captured using a dummy load Agilent programmable voltage 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) in a partially cloudy day in the sun in winter. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in the summer sun provided the panels do not too hot. These are on the roof of my house, flat on a field 3 / 12 to the south, which is optimal, but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the notes photos. Sorry for the default colors for Excel!

This is a graph MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) – you can see that the panels are optimized for the charging of a wet cell 12V right out of the box. Charging current is lit when the battery voltage drops to 13.0 VDC to 14.2 VDC and off with the controller included in the kit charge.

The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with the sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current is increased up to 7.0 Right after the storm. Follows the original review – these panels have been running consistently for 2 months in 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the Prosine below to drain the energy made.

While reading the power / current chart you should keep in mind the amplifiers have been multiplied by 10 so as to use the same Y axis (so 20A on the card corresponds to 2.0 A panel of current) Watts are volts * amps effective. This was taken in winter with clouds part – the expectations are for improvement X3 during the summer, but its still February and are in the northern hemisphere so we’ll have to wait and see. Basically a MPPT charger will not get but a few watts with this panel, so it is a good investment unless you already have that one around.

I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this seems to show some promise, and shows signs of good engineering costs and a complete design that can be achieved quickly by one person with little effort. I’d give it 5 stars if it were well packaged, but my purchase turned into a fiasco of shipment.

Most of all solar installations are classified in $ per watt, much like new homes are classified in $ / sq ft. We will have to bit meters later. Here you are getting 60W for $ 320 or about $ 5.33 per watt. Compared to a panel of similar power, the BP 365U Solar 65W and a nominal price (street) to 399, or $ 6.13 per watt amazon package seems to be a bargain when you consider that it is less complete battery (you hit one too late)

In fact, the agreement includes a package of Amazon Xantrex Inverter 175 watt with a .15 “idle” current designed for solar systems in which power consumption must be minimized. It also includes a simple diode / switch “charge controller” with 2 LEDs to indicate the voltage of the panel and the battery is full, but lacks the ability to tell what kind of battery you are using (full and set to 14.2 volts more or less so it is wet / flooded cells). None of these items are great buck, but who are you to a complete small-scale solar kit minus the battery out of the box, which is awesome.

Oh yes, the battery. I also ordered 28 AH battery Duracell 480W inverter with this panel so I have a battery. Also from Xantrex is a nice piece to complete the system. I made the mistake of ordering with solar panels (read)

So how does China produces a complete kit for a lower $ / watt price than professional solar companies such as BP Solar, GE, Kyocera, etc? Well – is the part we have forgotten for a while sq ‘. This uses 4 panels @ 15W each for up to 60 watts with a simple parallel adapter included in the kit. BP Solar is a panel size of 1 of these panels, 15W, or put another way, is 1 / 4 sq footage. Ok – now on the package. We need to get this from China to Amazon, and finally to the consumer. After returning for Amazon, we tried again, this time without the batteries and the delivery system itself. Fedx again noted the damage of the shipment, which wrecked 1 of 4 panels, but running on 3 / 4 panels work not only with the full performance. Amazon has declined because only the ship and ruin something twice instead of doing fedx pay for piling 120 pounds of batteries on top of the glass panels and poking through the box of polystyrene and the second time, so I’m still in negotiation with their ships, but the product does not deserve, but I do.

PERFORMANCE:

The design is actually very well done. You can do (with 4 panels) 12V (actually 15V) x 4A system, or a 30V x 2A or 60V x 1A configuration depending on your power inverter and battery collection. For me, this will always be tied to a 12VDC bus so that is good ships, but the flexibility is there if you have other stresses in use. There is no spare on the line with 16 foot cords on each panel that allows you to minimize the power lost in the wire because each panel has its own cord going to the combiner, after short runs are required. On a cloudy day, I was able to get 2 amps of 3 panels (30 W) – in full sun, reaching a maximum of 5.91A with 3 panels, so the Chinese production has underestimated their output as a 90W from 60W 1 / 4 panel in dead winter sun is doing very well – I’d like to know how it performs in the summer!

As for assembly, a very intelligent system is designed to support the panels of 1 “PVC pipe with elbows and T – all that is assembled with a unique bolt / wingnut style and piping systems have worked in these slots to ensure that panels will line up one way or another, without having to break them. Do not forget the battery – and they have not delivered with your solar panels. As for the emergency power, 60 watts, it will do much for you, but to maintain the generator battery charged and ready to go when the power fails. My natural gas genset is rated for 12,000 watts and 200 watts of these 60 4-Panel kit (800 panels), which would cost $ 64,000 and still not provide energy during the night, as the generator is not quiet. With 12,000 watts can run comfortably at home together. Taking account of these sets for natural gas can be had for under $ 3000 are clearly the best solution for the power backup systems house.

My use was to keep my rarely used 12VDC batteries all charged in the backyard.
