TOOK 3 MONTHS TO DIE. I'VE HAD SLICED BREAD THAT LASTED LONGER.
Was working great and in a flash, I got an device error notice. From what I understand this is a common occurance with this brand/model. Contacting the company to see what can be used to remedy this situation. From what I understand whatever happens, the data is lost forever. What a bummer.

WASTE OF MONEY!!!
I bought this in January 2010. In April completely stopped working and had to send to factory to fix. Needless to say, everything that was on it is lost forever! After 3 weeks finally rec'd it back. Plugged it in yesterday and it's not working again.....

It's an external hard drive.....
I removed the hard drive from the box. I plugged it into my mac. I saved what I wanted to save. It's still on the hard drive. It worked well.

compatibality
The product says it is MAC compatible but it does not do a full back up of MAC only PC. You can save files from MAC that's it.

I love it!!
Its a very nice hard drive, works well on my MacBook Pro and others computers with Windows. This is super lightweight! and I love its appearance. This is my first external hard drive I ever had and I can handle it very good, so its so easy to use!

I have half a dozen discs Toshiba laptops and some of them have served me well for many years. They are reliable and fast – with 500GB portable drive I get about 20MB / s read and write speeds (tested on two recent laptops HP, Intel and AMD with one another, both running Vista), which is the half of high-speed USB 2.0 ‘s theoretical maximum throughput. The drive can be used with PS3 and Mac out-of-box, but for best results with XP/Vista/Win7 you can convert to NTFS without reformatting or losing data already existing, using a DOS command: convert g: / fs: ntfs [where g: is the drive letter, or you can use a volume name as "tosh_500g" if the drive is already called tosh_500g].
Because this unit (like other portable drives) can not use a separate power line – draws power directly from USB port – the computer must have a powered USB port to use it. Almost all desktops and laptops have this feature recently, but if you have problems, it may be due to a low powered USB port (or USB hub), so you try another port or another computer.
Besides being a fast 5400 RPM, this Toshiba includes some important features:
- Backup software that backs up system files in addition to regular files and folders (great for the system recovery!)
- Password-protect your data through encryption
- Notice of disk space will let you know when the free space is running out
- Shock absorption technology known Toshiba, also used in iPods.
BTW, this unit is also a great value because for a Seagate 320GB Portable coast on [...], plus tax.

I just got this listed as “Toshiba USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive 500 GB in size. Has a very cool design, the case is similar to my iPod 5G 30GB – a smooth, flat front / top with the back rounded. It has a nice discreet activity light blue in one corner of the top (ie front) that is located on the surface for power and flashes for the task. USB2 connection is a way of micro-and contrary to another review is a standard – this is quite common micro style, I have it on my GPS and the camera so you can use the cord for all 3. The supplied cable is only a short cable (ie not “Y”), and my skills Asus netbook with a single USB port. The unit (like everyone else) is just plug and play – plug it in, the computer sees it, and you’re out. I reformatted into one large NTFS partition, 465GB (units are always sold with capacities of 10 “GB”, ie 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes (10 to the power 9), while computers use powers of 2 “GB” , where 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (2 raised to the power 30). I do not like this sales talk, but Toshiba make clear the difference in the leaflet very short – to their credit.
The drive comes with NTI Backup Now EZ. I already have a backup strategy (using xxcopy, please!) So you do not need this. It is well rated though.
4 stars instead of 5 because I do not know his reliability, and is not fast enough as I hoped (but still valid).
The main reason why I took this unit special is that Toshiba are warranted for 3 years, and all the others have only 1 year. E $ 90 with free shipping is great!
I also had the Kroo Portable Hard Drive EVA Case, fits well – just enough space for the drive and the USB cable short. This is a semi-hard case, but very little padding. Much better to leave the unit naked, but I would not drop it!
