I bought this Western Digital WD Elements 320 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBAAR3200ABK-NESN (Black) last week at, I regret to say, Target – not Amazon. Target had it “on sale” at $ 59.95, an irresistible price. This unit works perfectly with Linux (both Ubuntu Linux – which is my main computer’s operating system – and the modified-Xandros Linux found on the ASUS Eee PC 1000 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB Solid State Drive, 20 GB Eee Storage, Linux, 6 Cell Battery) Pearl White which i own) and, naturally, Windows. (It is pre-formatted “for Windows – it has some programs incorporated Which I of course immediately deleted as I do not use Windows.) This unit will also work perfectly with the Apple Mac operating system (Windows and Mac compatibility are specified on the box.) As another reviewer has mentioned, it may be necessary to format the drive for use with a Used Mac with a Linux computer, no formatting or any other special operations are necessary. Just plug it in and you’re instantly “on!” (Of course, this same comment about no formatting necessary also applies to Windows computers, though, the first time you use it, Windows machines may take a few seconds to recognize the new drive.) Packaged with the unit is a standard USB connection cord (see 1.1 and 2.0 and supports, in addition to connecting to your computer for data transfer, it also powers the unit, no other external power supply is necessary) as well as the usual warranty, etc.., information. In addition to CDs containing the operating manual is included. I have not looked at this – really however, what is there to know about how to use this external drive? Just plug it into your computer! – That is, of course, if you use these drives as I use them: as storage units only. (I now own quite a few of these drives.) I find that, especially with Ubuntu Linux, that it is very easy to copy everything in one’s “Home” folder to one of these external drives and, should it become necessary to reinstall the operating system, it is quite easy to restore all of your documents, music, pictures, etc.. from the external drive. It is also possible to store one’s music, videos, audio books, etc.. On one of these drives Thus freeing up space from your computer’s hard drive. (That’s why I have several of these things!) Naturally, the same uses I mention above are also available to Windows or Mac users. These portable external hard drives are very useful and this one, being a simple, basic, unit, is all one truly needs, in my opinion, if your reasons for buying one are the same as mine. I do suggest that, if you do not have an urgent need for one of these drives, or if you are buying an “extra” or “spare” unit, you wait until you see a really good “sale” price either on Amazon or elsewhere. Like all Western Digital external hard drives that I own it is very well-made and, with reasonable care, should last a very long time. (My oldest Western Digital external drive – 40 GB, “huge” at the time I bought it – is over five years old, still in use, and still going strong.) In my own personal experience the company is reputable, responsive and VERY customer-oriented.

Some satellite TV providers such as Dish Network, offer HDTV receivers with their packages. But many people do not know what it means to have HDTV. Here are some clues.

High Definition Television HDTV is what literally means. But high definition compared to what? In order to answer this question, we need to know a little ‘for the original system analog TV.

Analog TV
30 frames per second (in Europe 25) are indicated by normal analog TV. He does this by writing image lines horizontally, 525 lines in an image (in Europe 625) on the screen. The number of pixels on a single line is about 500. This would be a definition of 500 pixels per line by 525 (or 625) lines. Compared to modern computer monitors this is really bad. The difference between progressive and interlaced is not difficult. It has to do with a single image is built. With the technology interlaced odd rows are shown first and then the even lines are shown. The lines are shown in this order: 1,3,5, … , 521, 523, 525, 2, 4, 6, …. 522, 524, 1, 3, etc. This means that every 1 / 60 of a half-second image is displayed. This often results in flicker that can be tiring for the eyes.
Progressive technology, can show a full image every 1 / 60 of a second, resulting in a much more straightforward.

How is HDTV better?
Normal TV has a resolution of about 210.000 pixels. An HDTV screen has a resolution of up to 2,000,000 pixels, which offers up to 10 times more image detail.

Ration aspect of normal TV is 4 x 3 (4 / 3 times wider than high). An HDTV screen has an aspect ration of 16 x 9, which is also known as the big screen.

The Future of HDTV
The FCC (Federal Communications Committee) has mandated that all television stations in the United States must be capable of transmitting HDTV programs by the year 2006. The mandates of the FCC does not have an impact on their companies for transmission, but also cable companies and consumers.

Broadcast companies must invest in new equipment such as cameras, editing equipment, etc.

The cable companies are converting all their equipment, including receivers in the homes of their clients.

Consumers may have to purchase new equipment as a top box to convert digital signals back to analog signals, or even buy a whole set of new TV channels.

HDTV is the future, and truly a great step forward. We started with a simple black and white TV, then moved to color TV, and TV in widescreen. But all these systems are still based on the same signals as the original black and white TV used. Color TV, when it was introduced it was not possible to compel the total population to throw away their black-and-white TV set and buy a color TV. Therefore, a color TV signal still needs to be understandable for a TV in black and white. This prohibited the improvement of image quality until the age of digital TV.

The need to satisfy old TVs no longer exists and the very highest-quality HDTV is available via Satellite TV Systems, including Dish Network.

LCD TVs are sometimes susceptible to a delay that causes the outline of figures or objects to appear jagged.

LCD TVs are renowned for sharp images and vibrant colors. Plasma TVs are known for a wide range of colors and accurate color reproduction. LCD TVs are said to play a little ‘better in bright light conditions. Plasma TVs generally produce very black blacks whereas an LCD TV usually see a very dark gray charcoal. Technically, plasma TVs are said to contrast levels higher. Prices for both types of TVs are decreasing rapidly.

You also hear a lot about plasma and LCD displays today. The screens that were the standard for decades are called CRTs, and they worked well. If you use this type of screen, keep in mind that plasma and LCD screens are still quite expensive. However, they provide crisp and clear, that the old CRT screens could never hope to provide.

The best part is, because they are in such demand, many name brands have started to produce their own LCD HD televisions. The influx of market competition has brought prices down.

Since each manufacturer tries to lead the sales record, more features are offered and the prices are steadily declining. Soon, all homes should include an HD LCD TV in September

The history of HDTV (High Definition Television)

For those of you unfamiliar with HDTV, is the highest resolution in the new DTV set of rules in combination with CD-quality Dolby Digital surround sound. This combination creates spectacular illustration with stunning audio effects, which HDTV is quickly moving to become the new standard in television systems.

HDTV looks like a completely new innovation but in fact the system has been around in various forms since the mid-1970s and has developed a pretty impressive history.

In the years 1970 and 1980, the product testing for HDTV has been developed in Japan as a way to improve the quality of television and therefore sell more TVs. The first system was called MUSE HDTV and used filtering tricks to reduce the original signal source to reduce the use of bandwidth.

The idea of introducing HDTV in the United States has been greeted with mixed reactions. In 1980, the National Association of Broadcasters in the United States invited NHK, the public network in Japan, to present the ideas behind the MUSE system to the Federal Communications Commission. At that time, there are two groups that were strongly against the introduction of HDTV in the U.S.

The first group that opposed the introduction of this new technology was the terrestrial television broadcasters. They were frightened by the possibility of being excluded from the HDTV market because HDTV required more bandwidth (the amount of information transmitted via a channel or connection) than standard TV. These broadcasters worried because the channels that have already had the license would not be able to handle the bandwidth of this new form of television.

The other group that is concerned about HDTV in the United States was the Congress. Congress felt threatened by the innovations that have seen many Japanese came to the U.S. and ultimately did not want to introduce a new form of communication that was owned by another country all together.

With these two complaints in mind, the U.S. government has tried to invent a new form of HDTV. Groups of researchers and producers have been grouped together to form different teams. Each team would try to create an HDTV system that would fit into existing channels that were used by broadcasters.

After years of work, teams of researchers and producers have decided to join forces. This unit has given birth to a new group known as the Grand Alliance.

The researchers continued their attempts to develop this new form of HDTV, they discovered that this new technology should be partly digital, so that all the information needed to adapt to existing channels. With this in mind, you were able to develop a system that was very different from the Japanese system. NHK, the Japanese version of HDTV was analog, but the updated version created by U.S. researchers has come to be fully digital.

Unlike BETA VCRs and 8 track players, HDTV is a form of technology that is built to withstand the test of time.

With decades of development and research that have gone to optimize the HDTV system, this form of television is likely to last for decades to come.
