This is the Garmin third in our family. We have a 880 and a 250. This is the slowest to load maps in start-up, slower to acquire a satellite to the start-up and slower to redraw the map when the car makes a turn (which I have already completed the round before it starts re – design) … This is a device very disappointing. To test a theory that can not be unity, I bought an extension cable from Garmin and temporarily installed outside the car, this had no effect to accelerate the problems listed above, so I said it was clearly the unity and a satellite connection the poor.
I contacted Garmin who informed me that they are aware of the problems and should be sending a software update soon. That was 3 weeks ago, perhaps indicating a focus on the decline of customer service.
It seems Garmin rolled this first aware of the problems were resolved, only to get a new unit in the market (strategy similar to that used by Microsoft). The price and the problems are not worth the (little), enhanced graphics and given only look at the screen periodically, I really do not notice the difference in graphics between it and the 880/250. The much-announced “line indicator” graphic surface at every motorway junction, where more lanes are involved, perhaps, that could also be included in the update are still waiting.
If I had to do again, I would buy a Nuvi 760 and MSN Direct receiver online. With the purchase of two distinct parts, it becomes the same as a Nuvi 780 to cost much less. The 760 is much better unit at half the price of 785t or 880.
Maybe Garmin could spend less on marketing products and illegal transfer of funds to line their immense bargaining, better products to roll-out, and customer service more responsive.
I would stay with Garmin or Tom Tom as the use of established mapping companies, Garmin has the advantage on the system of using maps and Tom Tom has recently purchased the company’s exclusive mapping (GPS for Dummies).
December 11, 2008 Update: I recently updated the software and firmware available from the Garmin website. Screen refresh is faster and it seems that when you first turn on the unit and the satellites are acquired, the position of the screen in front of you in a direction different from what they really are. Apparently the CSR I spoke with in November was given wrong information, do not solve the problems that Garmin “knew” was provided to date. Judging by other “line of t” reviews, the 785t may be the only “lemon”. I think we must decide how important MSN Direct to make the selection of the model.
Jan, 2009 update
CSR Garmin exchange agreements made my 785t for another. No luck … still slow. ex: I have completed a left turn yesterday, before the unit told me to turn left before the icon on the screen indicated that I was doing a tour. I hope you know enough not to save money by using a microprocessor slower, especially for what they charge for their units.

Update 8-13-09 ** Do not let the recent software glitch scare you away from this unit. By now many people have heard that a software problem has caused all units 885T (and many others) to malfunction. Although it was a bit ‘a nuisance, Garmin replaced my unit (and everyone elses) promptly. New units purchased today do not have this problem.
** ** Original review I had a C550 and loved, but that has stolen so I had to buy a new GPS. I started with a Nuvi 885T because I was fascinated by the voice dialing. The good news is that the voice dialing works very, very well. The bad news is that I found the overall operation feels to be slow and fragmented, a fact that is mentioned in several reviews of others. Also, I had some problems with the drive locking, so she went back.
I had the 785T now for a couple of days.
Here’s what I like:
* Quick to lock the satellites, even on cold start
* Accurate directions
* Smooth scrolling
* Customizable Display
* Lane Assist works well and I like it. Functionality.
* Junction View works well and I like it, but in my opinion is not as useful as Garmin would lead to believe. A photo realistic image of the upcoming road signs flashing across the screen for about 5-8 seconds, with an indication as to which lane you should be a.
* Connecting Bluetooth with my Blackberry no problem
* Ability to send addresses from your computer to the unit wirelessly. ‘ve Used. It works.
* Small, light (unlike my old C550)
* MSN Direct is working well. MSN traffic seems to work well, although some guests prefer Lifetime of other traffic. I think it’s a matter of personal preference and also depends on where you live. I live outside of Washington, DC, and the coverage of MSN is strong.
Here’s what I like:
* Speakers barely strong enough. My C550 was rich, deep, powerful sound. The Nuvi 785T, like all nüvi, is shallow, a little ‘metal, not quite strong enough, healthy. I am really surprised that Garmin did not address this, as this is probably the number one complaint I have, and I’ve seen in other reviews. Unlike some other reviews, this was not a failure for me, as I found the volume and clarity that it is generally acceptable, but only marginally so.
* The speakers underpowered make the Bluetooth component less than perfect, but still usable
* The remaining distance and arrival time are slightly smaller than my C550, but it is remarkable and a bit ‘irritating (only slightly). I wear reading glasses, so sometimes I have to squint at the screen a bit ‘
* I am always taking the unit in and out of my car (I will not have this equipment stolen like my last one). Almost every time I have to fiddle with the mount such that it snaps in. It has to align perfectly, or not to click on, which requires 2 hands and a bit ‘concentration. Should be simpler and more intuitive than that.
* Update the maps was an adventure. I do not think this was the fault of this unit, but the Garmin website. Map updates are a huge file (192 MB), and twice is hanging around 180 MB that needs to start all over. A little ‘frustrating, but again, no fault of 785T for this, and I finally had everything squared away.
Overall, I give it 4 stars. Not perfect, several flaws, but overall, I like it and recommend it.
By the way, here is a tip of a purchase if you are interested in this unit …. Track and verify the daily price. Amazon changes their prices drastically from day to day. They do this on all their products, but I seem to notice more for the GPS unit. One day, this could be $ 500, then the next day would be $ 350, then the next day you could go back up to $ 500. My bottom line? Something less than $ 400 is a buy and a good value for the Nuvi 785T.
WOW! I love this thing. It’s everything that I expected and it makes reading so enjoyable. It’s all I need for reading. I don’t need a back light b/c I have a light that attaches and I don’t need color. I wish it would have came with a cover though but I have something that works just fine for it. I simply love my Kindle 2. I caught my husband fiddling around with it and told him “oh no brotha you got to get your own!”
