One hand, I love my Kindle 1 … I use it every day, I concur with my favorite newspaper, I sign my books, with annotations, highlights and bookmarks.
On the other hand my Kindle 1 that bothers me … Change unwanted pages, how clumsy I sometimes hold it to avoid hitting the buttons, the update page at times slow, and the screen freezes, which I now travel with a paper clip because I need to do a reset, while commuting train.
I’ve had the Kindle 2 in my hands for almost a day and brought on a commute. What follows is my “first impressions” review of the Kindle 2 from the perspective of an owner of the original K1. What has changed, what is best and what is worse?
5 great things I immediately noticed how different
First, when taking the K2 out of the box I immediately noticed that the back cover is not easily removable (though not all) and will not slip off my hands – as was often with the K1. The keyboard is also much, much smaller and less bulky.
The second thing I noticed is the management of power. I must not hold down two buttons to put the device to sleep. The switches for On / Off and Wireless On / Off are gone. There is one little switch on top of K2 that manages Sleep.
The third thing I noticed – in which the tape silver? In fact, the entire navigation structure has been completely overhauled – I’m still getting used to, but it is a huge step forward. The strip of silver has been replaced by a 4-way rocker that can also be pressed “OK” command, create bookmarks, and then highlight.
The fourth thing I noticed – while the page changing does not seem to be particularly fast – almost any other interaction on the screen is greatly accelerated … scrolling the cursor, find the words, highlight the text, and type your text.
The fifth thing I noticed – a new power cord. This unit uses USB cables that are not compatible with the K1. It ‘a bit’ of a break because I was hoping my wife and I could share power cables (she is taking over my K1).
What’s better:
Navigation is a big improvement. Moving the cursor over a word and the definition of the word immediately pop up in the bottom of the screen is fantastic. Use the ROCKER to move between articles in a newspaper will scan the card much faster and fun. Recall the strip of the menu is much faster and interactive. Clearly, Amazon is working to make navigation easier and faster. The hard work is evident.
Buttons: The K1 is a constant struggle with the changes page unintentional. The design was flawed from the outset. The single best improvement of K2 took a few minutes of reading the concentrate to achieve … the hinges are buttons on the outside – the limit – of K2. You must press the button on the inside to get to choose. This change alone has saved me from several inadvertent page changes. That combine with the smaller button and a major source of frustration was quickly eliminated!
Size: The K2 is thinner than the iPhone. It feels denser and perhaps a little heavier – although I did buy the premium cover that snaps into K2 and adds weight (btw, I love the cover and I think the reward is worth the investment).
Network speed: The K2 is possible to use cellular connections G3 and when activated it makes a big difference interactivity to Kindle store and when downloading content stored.
Power Management: the small power button on the top of the Kindle is actually a slide from power. That is, slide it to activate / deactivate the sleep mode on and off. Slide and hold to do a full power down. And the K1 of wireless on-off switch has been replaced by a menu choice of software. Works for me. Furthermore, compared to K1 awakening from sleep is super-fast.
What’s worse …
There is not much that I liked better in K1 than K2. One thing: the call of clippings and notes. K2 in these items listed only the first sentence or two of my highlights. K1 appears in full light – which makes reading through them much easier and more like reading the Cliff Notes. The new interface of K2 is annoying and makes the function much less useful. I will be writing to Amazon to see if we can get that changed.
Closing thoughts …
The K2 is a major refinement on the K1. You feel as easy to read as the K1, but it seems like a fruit and vegetables to my eyes (I usually read the scale point 3 and 4). In this regard, as a book, the K1 and K2 are comparable. Would not be my credit card to buy the K2 from a conviction that it is fundamentally easier to read. However, in my short time with the K2 is a device more pleasant to use. The change in the hanging and the size of the buttons is larger and will be difficult to return to K1. Amazon has broken a few paradigms that users are accustomed to K1 and I was going to K2 User’s Manual to understand some problems of content management that have changed in this version.
Why 4 stars and not 5? The Kindle will never get 5 stars from me until Amazon implements the idea of a library where I can give someone else a Kindle book, which would be the book would have disappeared from my Kindle and appear on them. After x number of days the book is automatically returned to me and removed Kindle the other person. Amazon said it wants the device to disappear and the content stand out. I say: As long as I can give a friend a book, the Kindle will never completely live up to that standard and will be, in my book, stuck at 4 stars.

I’m a new Kindle 2 owner and does not own a Kindle, I 1. I was very interested in the original Kindle, but decided to wait for improvements based on customer feedback, after it was issued, including the accidental release page turning. Since that seemed to have made the improvements I was waiting for (the other one was a little ‘more free space on the case to keep it) I took the plunge and got the new one.
I thought I’d start by listing my reasons to get the Kindle, because I think sometimes it can help others who are sitting on the fence deciding whether it is for them or not.
* Save money. While the cost of the Kindle front is steep in the long run you will pay for itself and save me money since I read an average of 4-8 books a month. With classic freely available, is also going to encourage me to expand my reading material at no additional cost.
* Environment. Most of the books I buy and read I read only once. I feel guilty about the trees needed to make the paper and all other forms of energy used to produce and mail / distribute the books needed to satisfy my appetite for reading.
* Storage. I’m out of shelf space and all the boxes of books do very little to add to the atmosphere of my apartment with one bedroom. The few times that I want to read something new, trying to find the book in all the windows is an exercise in frustration.
* EInk technology. I love the books and an electronic gadget is not the same experience. The new technology has virtually eliminated this concern.
* Convenience. The Whispernet is great for when you need the next book in a series now or want to stock up on some before you leave for a trip. Being able to have several books in Kindle to carry, instead of having to pack a bag just for my books for a week’s holiday is a huge advantage.
* Aging. I am 47 and middle age is starting to catch up with me! Being able to select larger print to avoid having to use my reading glasses (need them just started last year) and with a device that is easier to keep my hands to read is an advantage.
* Less than waiting for publication. I do not like reading hardbacks because of their size and weight. But it is distressing to wait for the last book finally came out in a series of mass-market format. Now I do not have to wait!
My Kindle was one of the supplied without pre-registration is on my account. After inserting the plug in my USB hub on my computer to charge the battery (charging cable design is very clever!) I read through the introductory part of the manual, which told me how to register your Kindle. I followed the instructions and a couple of minutes later I was all ready!
I thought it would be convenient to baptize my Kindle with the UR Stephen King novel, so went to the Amazon website on my computer and clicked the button to buy it. As soon as I clicked the button to confirm my order appeared on my Kindle almost instantly! I read it, while the Kindle term of office.
First impressions
When people say that the Kindle is elegant that he is not kidding. Everything is very well prepared and feels and looks just cool!
After reading through the introductory tutorial that loads automatically at the start and almost took me after a long time to learn what the buttons are where and what each of them do. The guide intro is plenty to start and I have not felt the need to work my way through the more detailed guidance.
A 5-way is teensy! I was a bit ’surprised by this at first thinking it would be too small to handle easily. But it only took a couple tries to do it well. Using a finger to push it does the trick. For people who have dexterity problems although it could be a potential stumbling block. If that is what I recommend to see if you can find someone with a Kindle 2 to try it for yourself before you see how it works for you.
Being able to change the font size is impressive! I started to read with the default size without glasses and I noticed it was a little ‘cross-eyed, so changed to a larger number by clicking the button pair and it was much easier without feeling like the print was too large and taken too page.
When you start reading really for the first time I was well aware that I was reading on an electronic gadget and it was a bit ‘disappointed that it has not “disappear” as for advertising. The gadget is feeling stressed by the need to press a button to turn the pages. However, in reality did not take too long for that feeling to fall. I imagine once the Kindle is not my new toy exciting and that’s what I use to read the books that we have completely lost the most awareness gadget.
It took very little time to get used to having to press a button to turn the pages and run the flash screen as only really startled me the first few times. I can see how it could bother some people, but it was a non-issue for me almost immediately. The page turns are very quick. I do not feel the need to press the button ahead of time to prepare for the end of the page at all, which obviously has a lot of Kindle owners do 1 since it is a bit ’slower.
So far the only real drawback I have is that the Kindle is heavier for its slim profile than I expected or preferred. The weight is a very solid feeling so you do not feel like the most is super fragile and going to break any minute, but after reading for a while ‘I could definitely feel weighing on my wrist.
On the other hand, the design allows Kindle to keep comfortable in different positions with both hands. Normally, when reading books like I just keep my left hand and in the course of a long reading session begins we often feel uncomfortable or even painful. I found myself easily passing off my Kindle in my hands and in different positions in each hand, without even really realize I was doing. Thus be able to pass so easily helps alleviate that is a bit ‘heavier highly desirable.
I ordered the case with Amazon and are quite happy. It is quite sturdy, looks and feels well made, and the design is perfect for how I will probably be using the Kindle Most of the time. Eventually I may get something like Patagonia that case hinges around the edges for the trip, but for every day reading this one suits me fine.
Unlike a lot of people who think that the case law as a separate purchase from the start was a good move from Amazon. If a case has been entered, as with the Kindle 1, which would be reflected in a higher price. But I imagine that the buyers probably 50% or more end up buying a different case, however, that suits their tastes, which means that you end up paying for the two cases. The way it was done with Kindle 2 means that you can choose which event you want now and pay only once.
Overall I’m happy to finally be part of the community Kindle and expect to spend many, many, many pleasant hours absorbed in books on my new best friend. I’m going to download the new book by Kim Harrison, because she came to a local bookstore this weekend and I want to read before going to see it to avoid dealing with spoilers. If I had not got the Kindle, which was not possible, because I’d been waiting for the mass market paperback, which does not come out until next November. Kindle me baby!
Update 3/23/09:
I feel a little ‘guilty adding more to an already long review, but felt that since I’ve now had the Kindle for almost a whole month, it would be appropriate. I’m completely in love with my Kindle! If my building would catch fire my Kindle will be what grabs me to save as I flee.
More or less like everyone else seems to me that the Kindle 2 is a desperate need for a user customizable folders for organizing books. This is the biggest negative for me so far.
So far I have purchased 19 ebooks. Some from Amazon and some directly from a couple of small presses. Tracking my savings in a worksheet that I have already saved $ 62.97 against the low-cost versions of the paper on those 19 books. Which is pretty impressive.
The dictionary feature is absolutely fantastic and now that I’m used to having him, I found it frustrating to be reading a book of paper and not be able to use it!
I did not think I would be with the highlight and features well-known or at all, but in fact were and are very nice extra. People in discussion groups book would find these to be a huge advantage.
The search function is also surprisingly useful for a wide range of uses.
I definitely lost most of what awareness gadget. This is what I read more books now.
One of the unexpected things is not great to deal with my favorite site falling and having to find my place. Or just be able to set the player down to a couple of minutes without bookmarking or losing my job because I encountered the book and its closure. And ‘little things like this that really elevate the experience of reading.

I was happy to upgrade my Kindle 1 to K2 … until I got up to use every day.
Having invested heavily in content Amazon Kindle, I looked forward to the new and improved version! I really wanted to love this device as much, if not more, that my purchase! Was to be my “backup insurance” and “protect my investment” in the Amazon content for the device. I expected and looked forward to everything Amazon said this device would be.
Out of the box, and on the surface, major cosmetic changes for the better. Once I started to use, however, my experience has become increasingly frustrating.
1. I have a huge volume of content Kindle (public domain, and Amazon). I discovered that I could transfer directly from my backup computer to Kindle 1 K2 again (because my backup is on the computer is addressed later in this review). All my content had to be reformatted from Amazon and re-downloaded from the site specifically for them and for the Kindle 2 (I’m not in an area Whispernet). Major pain. More investment in time. More inconvenience. Major turn-off. Have you guys ever heard of “bulk-download” the ability, or choose the files at once for copying a new device? I guess not.
2. All my previous issues of magazines and newspapers have been lost (ie, I could re-download specifically for the K-2), because Amazon will not back up subscriptions on their servers for more than 6 days. Since I PAID FOR THE CONTENT, I should be able to have CONTENT THAT ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD. Sorry, but I will not consider buying any newspapaers more or magazine subscriptions to turn on 1 or 2. Various (Wall Street Journal, Reader’s Digest) are cheaper online (even with the print edition included) and contains all (no images contained MIA, charts, quotes, etc.).
3. I purchased several books to read “Kindle 2″ in the title, but were 1 Kindle books with a new title page. OOPS!
4. Amazon also says that if you keep the content on their servers, I found many instances where I could download my books to the computer, because the voice that I paid was not available for download on my new Kindle2. Amazon said the book had been “pulled”. Excuse me, but I paid for it, pulled it or not, must always be avaiable for me since I paid for it. When I asked for a refund for the item pulled now available to me, because I could not REDOWNLOADED VOICE, I was told that the refund was not possible. Lesson Learned: now back up all the contents of my Kindle on my computer. Since Amazon has said “Do not worry, content is safe with us.” I respectfully disagree. Furthermore, some authors released new versions of their books for K2. However, the original version for K1 “disappeared” from the server and I could not even download it to K2 or K1. The name of the file, so if I were in an area Whispernet, the original would have been completely overwritten without me noticing! Imagine, I bought a K2 User Guide in May 2008, before falling off the engineers drafting table, instead of in February 2009!
5. The Jump “forward” and “Jump-back” feature (so convenient to Kindle 1, especially in cases in which an index does not exist and / or does not work – too often, I am afraid, Kindle content) is not a feature of K2 due to formatting issues editor for the Kindle 2. Except for the User Guide that comes pre-installed on the device, which works well in this document! 6. The “Index” in many books is not functional, frustrating in a book of 500 pages that you can not “jump” of Chapter 15 to Chapter 2. I reapeat this because of the level of anxiety created in me a device that would be “new and improved”. See the question above, as well!

8. No way to choose left or right justification in the printing of a book (as in K1). You get what you get. I, for example, to find fully justified text distraction. I prefer left-justified text. Also, if you select a book, the title track does not appear (as it does with K1). On Kindle 2, if the book has a long title, you must push the 5-selector to the right to get the rest of the title.

Finally – Amazon – I sent my Kindle 2 BACK turn on and wait 3. In the meantime, are purchasing a used Kindle 1 to protect my investment content with your company. Sorry, I think that laid an egg that could hatch expensive and refuses to fly. My ugly duckling (K1) will wait K3 (which I hope will be a Swann).
