Auto Motion Plus 120Hz
Auto Motion Plus 120Hz This technology doubles the frame rate 60-120 frames per second (120Hz LCD panel) without repeating the same image to make more frames. Instead, the TV intelligently calculates the image of the ‘middle’ between a frame and frame B and inserts it in between (Auto Motion Plus 120Hz processor), making a smooth transition from one frame to another.

Black will never again appear grayish. Black details will show in Vivid Black, even in dark scenes.

When I bought this TV from Amazon.com I had already decided on this Samsung 52 “series and was trying to decide between 650 and 750. At that time there was a small difference in price between the two on Amazon.com. I ended up choosing the 650 because I was putting the TV into a niche that had limited space.

The 650 has a less bulky frame around the LCD screen, and then it was only 50.2 cm in width than the 750 which is 52 “wide. Both screens are exactly the same viewing area. Beyond trying to accommodate my limited space, I felt that the smaller frame looked more beautiful on TV that the broader framework.

The other reason I chose the 650 is that it can swivel on the base, while the 750 is fixed on its base. Why do I put the TV in the corner, this swivel feature has come in very handy, as I had to get behind it from time to time to connect the cables, etc.

I read a lot about screen reflection and reinforcement potentially unpleasant experience for me while watching daytime TV mainly because the room is all windows is the way through two walls and is full of sunshine per day. I am pleased to report that screen reflection is absolutely no problem. The TV I was replacing with the Samsung LCD is a 32 old “Panasonic Panablack analog TV with a screen of glass, which had a lot of reflection. As a point of reference, the Samsung has about 20% of the reflection on the screen my old TV (judging from the time when the TV is off). When the TV is on, the Samsung has about 5% of reflection on the screen than what I used to have with my old TV, which can be due to the incredible brightness of the display.

I spent a number of months of this decision and I feel like hitting a home run with this purchase. Samsung has certainly exceeded my expectations with this model and I was very pleased with my first experience buying a TV online from Amazon.com.

December 20, 2008 UPDATE: I now owned the TV for more than 6 months. No Regrets. The television has survived well in a family with 5 children under the age of 10. It took a few direct hits to the screen with the toys thrown from a 2-year-old, but any marks on the screen easily rubbed off. It still seems like the day I realized and it works perfectly. I am very happy with this purchase.

June 7, 2009 UPDATE: Still going strong after 1 year. Absolutely no problem with the TV. Best buy I’ve ever done. Anyone who has seen hard to believe the quality of images. I get positive comments all the time.

I have had this TV since very early March. I’ve seen HD, SD and Blu-Ray and can not find a fault. The 650 handles motion very well to where blurring and other artifacts are vitually non-existent. The AMP is a very cool feature that brings a realism to film making it seem more realistic, or as if it were originally shot on HD Video. Some have said this gives off a ‘soap opera “effect. I see that description, but to me it makes film based DVD and movies look more like your watching a real game of life, the view through a window. It ‘a very cool!

I understand the concern of people with the glossy screens found on plasma and some LCD. This screen is a bit ‘less reflective of Samsung’s 71 series, but can still be a problem for some. It would be nice if there were a simple solution for this, but there is not. Sony and other manufacturers use a type of opaque screen that certainly helps or eliminates the problem, but introduces other negatives. I find colors and blacks just do not “pop” on matte screens and tend to wash more for off-angle viewing. The 650 has a picture with great depth and color from any angle, greatly adding the effect of immersion.

Much talk has been about the TOC bezel. I think Samsung has hit out the park with this. I absolutely love the red. I think it just adds a touch of class. It sets this tv apart from all others (although the picture quality is already present), while still being very subtle and retaining the ability to blend with any decor. Most people who came to my house do not even notice the red until the point it out. I am a little ‘tired of every set looking the same or a piano black bezel or flat black. This is a very welcome change.

I like many others suffered the closure problem. As has been said it appears Samsung has fixed the problem with a firmware upgrade. I updated the FW and so far so good. E ‘was annoying, but not a huge deal for me. Samsung should be commended for the speed with which it tackled the issue. I received several calls from upper level officials, who were very concerned with my problem. I never had this level of service from any other manufacturer. Well done Samsung! A side effect of the FW update is that the AMP processing received a boost. Before the FW update I usually had AMP on low at all times and occasionally put up. Now, I’m still in use at the low setting, but most of the time you put on the Middle occasionally, and find the setting a bit strong ‘too much for me. Can I put on High without most of the annoying artifacts people have desribed the 71 series has, which is nice, nut the actual effect is bit ‘too much for me.

Overall, this is the best LCD on the market. I can not see Sony or any of the other manufactures making a better TV this year. They can match perhaps, but certainly not overcome it. For those who were on the wall waiting to buy until the closure issue is resolved, your wait is over. Buy with complete confidence and enjoy one of the best TV’s out there!

I did the research and visit sites of brick and mortar and I concluded the Samsung features are the best on the market today. I was concerned about the auto shutdown problem that I have read. I called Samsung customer support and was told that it is not a problem but did not mention the firmware update that is actually published on their website today. Go to the Samsung web site and look under “Support / News & Alerts” – A650 Series LCD TV Auto Off Firmware Update. A small number of Samsung A650 series LCD TVs turn off automatically. The models affected are:

* LN40A650A1F
* LN46A650A1F
* LN52A650A1F

Samsung has released a firmware update that fixes the problem. If you have one of these models, Samsung recommends you install this firmware update on your TV, even if you do not check the auto off problem. If you have a USB memory drive, you can download the firmware from our website. For complete instructions on how to download and install the firmware update, go to [...]. Unless you have a USB memory, Samsung can send a disc containing the firmware. To get a copy of the firmware has been sent to you, call Samsung Customer Care at 1-800-Samsung (1-800-726-7864). They have the model and serial numbers handy when you call.
